READING IN ENGLISH AND IN FRNCH -
We read in English or French every day in class. Review and follow the 5 Finger Rule for choosing a "just right book". We use the same strategy when choosing books in French.
Grade Three Home Reading Activities:
Students should be reading at home for 15 minutes, 5 times per week, alternating between French and English reading material. Please encourage your child to choose and complete one of the activities listed below, once a week after reading. They should complete the activity in the language in which they have read that day be it English or French. You can complete the activities in order, roll 2 dice and select the activity related to the sum of the dice, pick a number out of a hat and complete that activity or come up with your own creative way of choosing the task. Make it fun and enjoy!
Activities:
1. Retell the story aloud in your own words. Focus on the key elements of the plot (the beginning, middle and end) rather than every detail.
2. Write down the 5 W’s & H of the story: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? (Qui? Quoi? Quand? Où? Pourquoi? Comment?)
3. Choose three words from the text and use them in a different sentence. Write down your sentences and underline the word from the story.
4. Choose one word from the text and think of five words or more that rhyme with it. Write down all of the rhyming words you come up with.
5. Choose one sentence from the book and re-write it in cursive.
6. Illustrate your favourite scene from the story.
7. If you could change the ending of the story, write down how would it end?
8. If you’re reading a fictional story, describe the main character in writing.
9. If you’re reading a nonfiction story, list three facts in writing.
10. Choose a different title for the story and design a new title page.
11. Choose three sentences from the story and rearrange the words into alphabetical order in writing.
12. Write down the main problem of the story.
